Virgin Media will Not Offer Unlimited Music Download

Virgin Media announced in June 2009 that it would launch a music download facility for its subscribers in association with major music labels. While Universal Music has agreed to it and is partnering with Virgin to launch this service, EMI and Sony Music have expressed their concerns about its future prospects and their displeasure over Virgin’s partnership with Universal.

Previously, Virgin had planned to launch an unlimited music download service by negotiating with all major labels. However, it has just announced that it is cutting down on its unlimited plan, and that the subscribers will now not have the option of unlimited downloads.

The current offer by the company provides an upper of 40 MP3 download every month, for which the subscriber will be charged at the monthly rate of £15. This was reported in The Register, and it has come as a huge dent in the hopes of those who were looking forward to unlimited music downloads. However, the subscriber will still be able to stream any number of music tracks without any limitation.

Virgin is not the only company putting forward a scheme for music downloads. Last year BSkyB had also announced that it intends to launch such a service. However, not much has been declared by the company regarding this service, which it calls Sky Songs.
