Crimestoppers
As the crime rates continue to shock the nation, there is one man on a mission to improve the situation: Michael Ashcroft.
The top charity giver in 2008, Ashcroft has set up a charity programme called Crimestoppers which works with local police to track down and apprehend criminals on the run.
The programme allows anyone to call a hotline anonymously with information about crime, therefore engaging the community in the prevention of and protection from dangerous individuals in their area.
They have a Most Wanted list, which appears on the website with details of each person, a photograph, and what they are wanted for. While it may be frightening to see such a long list, what’s helpful is that the charity knows that these people are out there and are working hard to catch them. Crimestoppers have most recently been successful in Spain, incriminating several men on the run.
As a board member and lifelong philanthropist, Michael Ashcroft not only works with Crimestoppers but with several other charities around the world as well. Since Crimestoppers began five years ago, 500 arrests have been made as a direct result of the information appearing on the website. The arrests include crimes of murder, rape, drug smuggling, robbery, and assault.
